Since its establishment over 60 years ago, over 120,000 needy children have benefited from the school's academic program and its various projects. In the 2021-2022 academic year there were 846 children (448 girls and 398 boys) attending the school. We are increasingly emphasizing education for girls, as they labour under greater disadvantage in both society and the work place.
The school has been rated as excellent by Ministry of Education inspectors and others. Most years we achieve a 100% pass-rate in the Grade 8 National exams. The reasons for this are a conducive educational environment which enhances the teaching and learning process, strong administrative follow up and support, interested teachers and relatively small class sizes.
The schools are a rural oasis in the midst of the urban sprawl of Addis Ababa. The environs of the schools are in stark contrast to the surrounding neighbourhoods. Children entering the gates leave behind the noise, fumes and bustle of the streets. There is ample opportunity and space for them to socialise and play sports in the breaks between classes.
In 2015 the school sports team beat all other schools in Addis Ababa at a multi-sports day sponsored by the city’s mayor. This was a major achievement in a sports (especially running) mad country and a considerable boost to the team’s, and the school’s, self-esteem.
The Globe Magazine wrote extensively about Asfaw's education philosophy in 2010 in recognition of his nomination for a World Child Rights Hero of the decade.
