Since its establishment over 50 years ago over 120,000 needy children have benefited from the school's academic program and its various projects.
In the 2021-2022 academic year there were 846 children (448 girls and 398 boys) attending the school - nearly all of them too poor to pay the small registration fee (‘cost sharing’) for a government school. We are increasingly emphasizing education for girls, as they labour under greater disadvantage in both society and the work place.

The school has always been rated as excellent by Ministry of Education inspectors and others. Most years we achieve a 100% pass-rate in the Grade 8 National exams. The reasons for this are a conducive educational environment which enhances the teaching and learning process, strong administrative follow up and support, interested teachers, relatively small class size and financial and material assistance for needy students.
In 2015 the school sports team beat all other schools in Addis Ababa at a multi-sports day sponsored by the city’s mayor. This was a major achievement in a sports (especially running) mad country and a considerable boost to the team’s, and the school’s, self-esteem.
The Globe Magazine wrote extensively about Asfaw's education philosophy in 2010 in recognition of his nomination for a World Child Rights Hero of the decade.
