Covid19 has hit Ethiopia, just as it has hit everywhere else. Currently (April 2021) there is a high rate of infection. The school was closed for 8 months from May to December 2020, during the initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The school has now been re-opened since December and the normal academic program is being undertaken. To permit social distancing and avoid crowding, students attend classes on alternate days including Saturday. Sanitary precautions are carefully followed, with temperatures taken at the gate, handwashing and using sanitizer, wearing masks. Instructions from the Ministry of Education are observed.
There has been no means to offer remote learning using computers. Instead, a programme of home learning through worksheets has been put in place, with the enthusiastic involvement of parents. It has attracted government interest as a model for other schools.
The Asra Hawariat School Fund is committed to the continuing support of the school, its staff and pupils during the pandemic. Fund-raising has of course been more difficult and maintaining the Fund’s income a challenge. The school’s unique facilities and commitment to disadvantaged children are needed more than ever.
This pandemic has affected the Fund’s income significantly, as it has affected the charitable sector generally. Please continue to support the Fund if you possibly can. We shall keep you all informed as the situation develops.
